The upcoming GTA Trilogy is a compilation of Grand Theft Auto 3 (2001), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). All three games have been completely remastered with visual enhancements and visual upgrades.

Grove Street Games serves as the developer with Rockstar Games publishing. Prior to working on the GTA Trilogy, Grove Street Games had developed Ark: Survival Evolved for iOS and Android, Bully for iOS and Android, and Auralux Constellations for iOS, Android, and PC. Despite having over a decade of experience, the studio has yet to produce anything for consoles. It will be interesting to see how they handle such a notable series.

In an age where many developers are going through their back catalogs and either remaking or remastering them for rerelease, it isn’t surprising to see Rockstar Games do the same with three of their most popular titles. It offers new players the chance to experience games that helped define a genre and allows those that played them nearly two decades ago to relive them. In addition to the visual overhaul, the reported gameplay update should help the games feel better and more on par with the current generation of Grand Theft Auto games.

While it’s nice to see some attention being paid to classics, there are many that continue to be frustrated by a lack of new games in the series. Grand Theft Auto 5 was released back in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since then, it has been ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. While it can’t be denied that GTA Online has been a huge success for the company, there are many that feel resources, be they internal or partnered development studios, would be better invested in a potential GTA 6. Either way, players will soon be able to replay some classics without digging out their old consoles and memory cards.
