Takeoff, real name Kirshnik Khari Ball, was the youngest member of the platinum-selling rap group Migos, together with his relatives Quavo and Offset. The trio is known for hits like “Bad and Boujee” and “Open It Up.” Their track “Stir Fry” was featured on Radio Los Santos in the DLC GTA Online: The Contract. On November 1st, Takeoff was fatally shot at a bowling alley in Houston, where he attended a private party. Reports claimed that he got into an altercation outside the venue over a dice game, which resulted in the shooting. The rapper was only 28 years old.

The hip-hop community, including big names like Beyonce and Tyler, the Creator, mourned the passing of the rapper. A few days later, GTA Online players set up a funeral for Takeoff in the game. The official invite read that the event would take place in three locations, and that players must wear white for the funeral. Killing was prohibited and players must follow GTA Online’s street laws. Photos from Takeoff’s in-game funeral showed multiple white cars parked on a lawn and by a sidewalk.
After the procession and service, players attended an after party at a mansion. In a TikTok video by gunsmoke.gaming, it showed the avatars dancing under strobe lights as they threw money around. They also watched a fireworks display towards the end of the video. The event garnered mostly positive reactions from fans online. They also expressed their gratitude for honoring Takeoff in their own way.
GTA Online rose in popularity in the last few years thanks to roleplay mods and servers. In 2021, it became the most-watched game on Twitch. With Migos being part of the game’s legacy through “Stir Fry,” it seemed fitting for players and hip-hop fans to celebrate Takeoff’s life through the game.
The sixth GTA game is currently in development, so the Rockstar Games still has time to add Migos or any of Takeoff’s solo tracks in the one of the game’s radio stations.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
