The new online heist is set to release next week on the 12th of December. Previous GTA V heists have centred around a bank robbery, a prison break, and stealing laboratory data, but the Doomsday Heist sets the stakes much higher. According to the description given by Rockstar, players will be out to prevent the end of the world, hence the title of the heist.
Given that Rockstar have said that the update schedule for GTA Online will slow down once Red Dead Redemption 2 releases, the Doomsday Heist could be designed as a last hurrah of sorts for the game’s heists before Rockstar shifts its attentions to the new title.
The trailer released by Rockstar shows a wide range of clips from both cutscenes and gameplay, featuring explosive sequences of jetpacks, aerial combat, and the flying cars pictured above, which are also seen underwater approaching a submarine. The story is certainly not subtle, and looks set to be the largest and most over-the-top heist to date for GTA V. Considering that the last update to the game added in a vehicle heavily reminiscent of the Batmobile, Rockstar is clearly not running out of ways to up the ante and keep fans coming back for more.
With the recent news that GTA V has become the best-selling video game of all time, the Doomsday Heist’s announcement suggests that Rockstar has no intention of simply resting on its laurels in the lead-up to the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.
GTA: Online is available now.
