The original game saw players take on the character of a young De Sardet on a magic touched island that is also under the pall of a deadly pandemic. The main character is tasked with adventuring out with companions on an adventure to find a cure for the Malichor plague. Along the way, De Sardet meets all sorts of characters that can become either allies or enemies and there is even a way for most of the characters in Greedfall to be romanced. Over the years, Spiders and NACON announced the game was popular enough to generate more than 2 million copies sold and that, in turn, was enough to spur the companies to work on a sequel.

The companies announced that Greedfall 2 is going to build on the successes of the original game when it comes to the weapons and RPG elements of Greedfall. However, The Dying World will also look to improve on some of the mechanics of its predecessor including what the developer is calling a “more tactical combat.”

Greedfall 2: The Dying World is actually a prequel, with the story of the new game starting about three years before the adventures of De Sardet. This time around users will play as a native of Teer Fradee. The main character has actually been removed from that island by force and taken to Gacane. Once there, players will need to use cunning, diplomacy, or combat in order to win their freedom. The game will once again offer the ability for users to make allies or enemies that will impact how the game plays out.

Spiders Founder and Director Jehanne Rousseau said as part of the announcement that as the company worked on development of Steelrising, it never really lost an interest in returning to the world of Greedfall. In describing what Rousseau sees as the key features of the upcoming title, he added that he hopes players will “have unforgettable adventures,” in Greedfall 2: The Dying World.

As it turns out, it seems as if Spiders and NACON really never stopped working on the Greedfall franchise even while working on the new IP in Steelrising. Just last year the developers released an Xbox Series X/S and PS5 upgrade as well as the “De Vespe Conspiracy” expansion.
